Charting New Paths from a Shared Past

Sameboat Project is a not-for-profit organisation committed to using cross cultural art and performance for reconciliation, participation and community building.

Our main objective is to send a crew from Africa, the UK and the Caribbean to retrace the Atlantic Slave Triangle on a sailing boat and for that crew to transport a cargo of cultural arts and symbols gathered from theatre audiences in the UK, Europe and Africa.

Sameboat Project aims to develop an understanding of the historical roots and contemporary results of The Slave Trade using performance, art, ritual, music and water sports to commemorate and redeem the past sufferings of all races.

Sameboat Project Sierra Leone

Sameboat Project Sierra Leone now has over a 100 members and an office in the National Stadium, from which outreach projects seek to engage local people through theatre in activities designed to strengthen their communities and create opportunities for economic and cultural development.

In March 2008, Amistad Heritage International and Sameboat Project Sierra Leone  commemorated the 201 years of the Abolition of the Atlantic Slave Trade at a press conference held at the Amistad Heritage office, Fort Street, Freetown.

Executive Director of Amistad Heritage International, Mr. Samuel H. Pieh. said the slave trade past and present was a gross abuse of human rights. He said victims of slavery are often also sufferers of psychological enslavement and added that slavery anywhere is a threat to human freedom.

Sameboat FAQ

What is the aim of, and principle behind, the Sameboat Project?

Sameboat Project is a not-for-profit organisation which we hope will eventually become a full charity.
A community group oversees, fundraises and authorises the entire project by hiring a project manager, employing performers, sailors, artists etc

Members have the right to vote for the committee who will oversee the project.
Members have the right to call an extraordinary general meeting if they are dissatisfied with how the project is being run.
Members are NOT financially or legally liable Members do not have to go on the boat We will send more details to anyone who wishes to be a member.

The committee will run the project and will consist of a minimum of chair, treasurer, secretary and one other.
Anyone who wants to be considered for the committee should also send some details of relevant experience (IT skills, accounting, management etc)
